The Puzzle

We’ve got some readings on 37 stray comets that are about to make impact on the four Galilean moons of Jupiter – Europa, Callisto, Io and Ganymede. We’re not sure which comets are going to which moon, but we have a dossier on each moon that might help you sort these comets and figure out what’s going on.

Our satellite is also picking up on some excess radiation believed to be from the CMBR? Something sounds a bit funny...there might be some miscommunication between us and mission control, but this might make more sense once you’ve got your final answer.

The Comets

comets

Europa

Europa is believed to have once been home to a large body of water, much like many locations on Earth. Comets are coming for Europa in pairs, looking to flash in and splash in! Can you find the direction these pairs are going and flag them down?

Callisto

Callisto is one of the oldest and most cratered objects in the entire Solar System. It’s important we find the comets and follow them through to exactly where they'll impact.

Be careful, though! The surface of Callisto is very icy. Brr!

In order, the ten comets we need to look out for are…

  • One that might lose courage when the time comes.
  • One that’s ignoring us.
  • One that might suddenly stop abruptly.
  • One that’s bringing us some beers.
  • One that’s bringing us some lunch meat.
  • One that’s coming off a herpes infection.
  • One that’s coming from a Civil War battle in Virginia.
  • One that’s reaching out to us, unsolicited.
  • One that’s bringing us snacks from a creamery.
  • One that’s interested in US-Soviet tensions.

Io

Ganymede

Ganymede is the largest moon in the solar system. And surely the comets coming for it are the best, the biggest, the firsts of their kind. It won’t settle for less!
